Kamuikotan

Japanese:
Kamuikotan

This area is located in the west of Asahikawa City in central Hokkaido. It also refers to the 10 km long gorge of the Ishikari River, which flows along the border between Asahikawa City and Fukagawa City in the area, and is a scenic spot. The gorge was carved into the mountain range between the Kamikawa Basin and the Ishikari Plain as the Ishikari River crossed it. The metamorphic rocks of the Paleozoic strata were eroded to form abysses of strange rock formations. One of the Ainu place names, Kamuy (god) Kotan (settlement or residence), means the home of a demon god, and was a difficult place to navigate. The Hakodate Main Line runs along the right bank, but in 1969, the Kamuy Tunnel was opened and the former railway line was turned into a 19.3 km long cycling road. Kamuikotan Station was closed due to improvements to the track, but was restored in 1989 and is now used as a rest area on the cycling road. National Route 12 runs along the left bank, and an old white suspension bridge spans the area near the old station, where the current is particularly strong. 1.5 kilometers southwest of the suspension bridge are the Kamuikotan Ruins (a historic road site). There are over 200 pit dwellings at the ruins, many of which are remains of dwellings from the Satsumon culture period.
