A good document is a document that is presented on an auspicious day after something has been decided. The ceremony to present a good document was called a good document presentation at the Imperial Court, but the samurai class also followed this tradition and called the ceremony in which the shogun affixed his seal (kao) to the good document a good document presentation. During the Heian period, the good document presentation at the Imperial Court was a ceremony in which the benkan, kurodo, or gaki presented a good document to the emperor who appeared at Seiryoden on occasions such as the beginning of a new year, the beginning of government, a new era, or a succession of a new era. The good document presentation at the samurai class imitated the good document presentation at the nobles, but there are some differences between the two, and there are also some differences in the contents of the good document presentations made by the Kamakura and Muromachi shogunates.

吉書とは，物事の改まったのち，吉日良辰を選んで奏聞する文書である。そして吉書を奏覧する儀式を朝廷では吉書奏といったが，武家でもこの儀にならって，将軍が吉書に判(花押)をすえる儀式を吉書始と称した。平安時代，朝廷の吉書奏は，年首，政始（まつりごとはじめ），移徙（いし），改元，代替などに際して，清涼殿に出御した天皇に対して，弁官，蔵人または外記から吉書を奉上する儀式であった。武家の吉書始は，公家の吉書奏を模倣したものであるが，両者の間には多少の違いがあり，また鎌倉･室町両幕府の吉書始の内容にもそれぞれ若干の差異が認められる。
