[Japanese Shamanism]
Japanese shamanism has been centered on female shamans, as represented by Himiko, queen of Yamataikoku in the mid-3rd century, throughout history and into the present. The majority of people in the Tohoku region, such as itako, gomisō, kamisan, onakama, and waka, as well as local practitioners such as ascetics, prayer masters, and oracles, and the yuta, kamuukakariya, and monoshiri of the Nansei Islands, are considered to have shamanic characteristics and roles. Most are women, and the religious form centered on them (shamanism) forms a major part of Japan's foundational religion or indigenous beliefs.
