Kameyama Company

...A political group that was involved in trade and shipping, but also planned to participate in the movement to overthrow the shogunate. Among the trainees at the Kobe Naval Training School, which was abolished in 1865 (Keio 1), more than 20 people led by Sakamoto Ryoma went to Kagoshima under the protection of the Satsuma domain, but immediately moved to Nagasaki accompanied by Komatsu Tatewaki of the same domain, and with the support of the wealthy merchant family of the Ozone family there, they established the Kameyama Shachu in late May of the same year. After that, the Shachu borrowed the name of the Satsuma domain and was supported by the shipping business of the Ozone family, and mediated the import of weapons and ships from the Satsuma and Choshu domains, and also studied navigation while working in the shipping business.

…貿易，海運などを業としながらも倒幕運動への参加を企図した政治集団。1865年(慶応1)に廃止された神戸海軍操練所の修業生のうち坂本竜馬を中心とする20余名は，薩摩藩の保護をえて鹿児島に赴くが，ただちに同藩の小松帯刀に伴われて長崎に移り，同地の豪商小曾根家の援助をえて，同年5月下旬に〈亀山社中〉を成立させる。その後社中は，薩摩藩の名義を借り，小曾根家の海運業に支えられて，薩長両藩などの武器･艦船の輸入を仲介し，あわせて海運業に従事しながら航海術を修業していた。…
