A method of lowering body temperature by cooling the body surface, decreasing metabolism, and performing surgery in order to reduce the body's reaction to external stimuli associated with surgery. In 1951, a French researcher, H. Labory, et al., used anesthetics, sedatives, and antihistamines to block the action of the body's autonomic nervous system and lower body temperature in accordance with the outside temperature, creating this state. In artificial hibernation, the effect of lowering body temperature is particularly important, and in this sense it is considered a type of hypothermia anesthesia. In addition, the autonomic nerve blocking drugs used in this method have the effect of improving the symptoms of psychiatric patients, so it is being developed as a treatment for psychiatric disorders.

体表面冷却によって体温を低下させ，代謝を減少させて手術を行い，手術に伴う外的刺激に対する生体の反応を少なくしようとする方法。1951年フランスのH.ラボリらは麻酔剤，鎮静剤，抗ヒスタミン剤などを使い，生体の自律神経系の作用を遮断(しゃだん)し，体温を外界温度に応じ低下させ，このような状態をつくりだした。人工冬眠では特に体温下降による効果が重視され，この意味では低体温麻酔の一種とみられる。また，この際用いられる自律神経遮断薬が精神病患者の症状を改善する作用をすることから，精神疾患の治療として発展している。
