Damage caused by agricultural pests occurs on the stems, leaves, hearts, fruits, trunks, and underground parts of plants, but pests that feed especially on the hearts and fruits are collectively called heart-feeding insects, and include those of the families Pyralidae and Botrytis. Of these, three species, the pear fruit moth, the peach fruit moth, and the peach diet moth (Conogeoidea platyphylla), are typical heart-feeding insects that damage fruit in Japan, and all of them cause damage by invading the fruit's interior with larvae that hatch from eggs laid on the fruit's surface. Meanwhile, the codling moth, a close relative of the pear fruit moth and well-known as an apple pest in America and Europe, is being watched for invasion into Japan.
