Sensillum - Sensillum

Sensillum - Sensillum
These are tiny sensory organs found on the surface of insect bodies. They consist of a cuticular apparatus formed by changes in the body wall to receive stimuli, a small number of sensory cells attached to it, and cuticle-producing cells that act as supporting cells around the sensory cells. They receive chemoreception, mechanoreception, thermoreception, and hygroreception, etc. Depending on the difference in the cuticular apparatus, they are classified into setal sensilla with a hair-like structure on a thick cuticular wall, hair-like sensilla with a long hair-like structure on a thin cuticular wall, cone-shaped sensilla with a similarly short hair-like structure, fossa-like sensilla with a hair-like structure at the bottom of the depression, shield-like sensilla with a circular or elliptical plate-like structure, and bell-shaped sensilla with a dome-shaped structure. They are also classified according to the differences in their microstructure and function as determined by observation under an electron microscope.
