...The reform movement aimed for what could be called "naturalized physical education," and unlike the formalism of old gymnastics, it sought new exercise content that would attract the interest of children and students, with the pillars of "naturalization of exercise" and "awareness of the purpose of exercise." T.D. Wood (1865-1951) and R. Cassidy (1895-1980), representative figures of this reform movement, who wrote a book called "The New Physical Education" in 1927, set out eight areas of new exercise content in the book, one of which was activities that cultivated one's own bodily control and courage, such as feats and stunts, and specifically included stunts and apparatus exercises. As the activities of this "new physical education" were promoted, stunts also began to attract attention and became more popular.

…その改革運動でめざされたのは〈自然化された体育〉といえるものであり，従来の古い体操のような形式主義とは異なり，〈運動の自然化〉と〈運動目的の自覚化〉を柱にした，児童生徒の興味を引きつける新しい運動内容が考えられていた。この改革運動の代表的な人物であり，1927年にその名の通りの《新体育The New Physical Education》という本を著したウッドT.D.Wood(1865‐1951)とキャシディR.Cassidy(1895‐1980)は，その著書の中で新たな運動内容として八つの領域を設定しているが，その中の一領域として，妙技や離れわざなどの自己の身体支配能力や勇気を養う活動を挙げており，その具体的な内容としてスタンツと器械運動を取り上げていた。そして，このような〈新体育〉の活動が推し進められていくにともなってスタンツも注目されるようになり，盛んになっていった。…
