Ball stick - Gitcho
An old Japanese game similar to hockey. It evolved from dakyuu (ball-playing game) introduced from China and became a children's game. A New Year's game for children. It was also called kyujou, gichou, gitcho, tamaiuchi, dakyuu, or mariuchi. It is a game in which players hit a wooden disc ball with a stick with a hexagonal head. In the Edo period, it was sold as a special toy (gangu) for boys to give as a New Year's gift, and was popular. This type of game continued to be played after the Meiji period, and was called hamanage, hanmanage, or gitcho.

ホッケーによく似た日本の古い遊び。中国から伝わった打毬(だきゅう)から転じて子どもの遊びとなったもの。子どもの正月遊戯。〈きゅうじょう〉〈ぎちょう〉〈ぎっちょ〉〈たまうち〉〈だきゅう〉〈まりうち〉などともいった。断面が六角柱のヘッドのついたスティックで,木製円盤のボールを打ち合う遊び。江戸時代には正月男子の祝い物の専用玩具(がんぐ)として売り出され,人気があった。明治以降も〈はまなげ〉〈はんまなげ〉〈ぎっちょ〉などと呼ばれて,この種の遊びが行われていた。
