Shinkan

A Chinese literati from the Northern Song Dynasty. His pen name was Shaoyou, also known as Taixu. He went by the name Huaihai Jushi. He was from Gaoyou (Jiangsu Province). He was one of the four scholars under Su Shi. In 1085 (8th year of the Yuanfeng era), he passed the Jinshi examination. In the early years of the Yuanyou era (1086-93), he was recommended by Su Shi to become a Doctor of Grand Studies, and became the editor of the national history. However, at the beginning of the Shaosheng era (1094-97), due to the rise of the New Law Party, he was exiled from Chenzhou (Hunan Province) to Leizhou (Guangdong Province) as he belonged to the Old Law Party. He was later pardoned and died in Tengzhou (Guangxi Province) on his way back. He was skilled in poetry and prose, especially in lyric writing. He excelled in elaborate rhetoric and his poems were full of sentimentality, making him a representative of the Northern Song Dynasty's Eloquent School. He wrote the "Huaihai Collection" and his anthology "Huaihai Jushi Long Short Verses."

中国、北宋(ほくそう)の文人。字(あざな)は少游(しょうゆう)、また太虚。淮海居士(わいかいこじ)と号した。高郵（江蘇(こうそ)省）の人。蘇軾(そしょく)門下の四学士の一人。1085年（元豊8）進士に及第。元祐(げんゆう)（1086～93）の初年、蘇軾の推薦で太学博士となり、国史編集官となったが、紹聖（1094～97）の初め、旧法党に属していたため、新法党の台頭により、郴州(ちんしゅう)（湖南省）からさらに雷州（広東(カントン)省）へと流され、のちに許されて帰る途中、藤州（広西省）で客死した。詩文をよくし、とくに詞(し)に優れた。詩は精緻(せいち)な修辞を得意とし、詞は感傷に富み北宋の婉約(えんやく)派を代表する。著に『淮海集』があり、詞集に『淮海居士長短句』がある。
