Théâtre du Soleil

A French avant-garde theater company founded in 1964 by female director Ariane Mnouchkine (1939-). Aiming to create a kind of community with the aim of exploring new theatrical techniques and pursuing equal rights for its members, the company attracted attention with its third performance, a group performance of Wesker's "The Kitchen." In 1970, the group performed a revolutionary drama "1789" at an ammunition warehouse in Vincennes, creating a festive space that included audience participation through group creation. Since then, the company has continued to attract attention with works such as the sequel to the revolutionary drama "1793" (1972) and "The Golden Age" (1975), which incorporated commedia dell'arte acting into modern society, and has recently achieved success with its oriental-style direction that incorporates Japanese kabuki techniques in a series of Shakespeare plays such as "Richard II." The film Molière (1978), directed by Mnouchkine and featuring the entire Théâtre du Soleil company, was also well received.

フランスの前衛劇団。1964年女流演出家アリアーヌ・ムヌーシュキンAriane Mnouchkine（1939―　）を中心に結成された。新しい演技術の探究と、劇団員の平等の権利の追求を目的とした一種の共同体を目ざして活動、第3回公演のウェスカー作『調理場』の集団演技によって一躍注目を浴びるようになる。1970年バンセンヌの弾薬倉庫で上演された集団革命劇『1789年』では、集団創作による観客参加を含めた祝祭空間を実現した。以後、革命劇の続編『1793年』（1972）、コメディア・デラルテの演技を現代社会のなかに組み込んだ『黄金時代』（1975）などでつねに注目を集め、最近では『リチャード2世』などシェークスピア劇の連作で、日本の歌舞伎(かぶき)の手法などを取り入れた東洋風の演出で成功を博している。ムヌーシュキンが監督し太陽劇団の総出演による映画『モリエール』（1978）も評判をよんだ。
