Okansen Dance - Okansen Dance

Japanese:
Okansen Dance - Okansen Dance

This was a performing art that was held on a special stage within Shuri Castle to welcome the investiture envoys who came to Ryukyu as envoys from the Chinese emperor during the Ryukyu Dynasty. It was performed 22 times between 1404 (Oei 11) and 1866 (Keio 2). There are no documents from before 1543 (Tenbun 12), so it is unknown, but from after that it can be found in the Shiroku, a record compiled by the investiture envoys, which gives an idea of what it was like at the time. In the old days, it was often a group dance form performed by young children, and it was only after 1719 (Kyoho 4) that kumiodori and haodori were added, when Tamagusuku Chokun became the dance magistrate.
