The capital of the province of Pistoia in Tuscany, central-west Italy. It occupies 65m above sea level at the southern foot of the Apennine Mountains, near the Ombrone River, a tributary of the Arno River, and is located about 30km northwest of Florence. In ancient times, the town was called Pistoria, passed through the hands of the Ligurians and Etruscans, became a Roman town, was destroyed once, but was rebuilt, and has been under Florentine control since 1329. The current city walls were built just before that. It is said that the first pistol was made here, and that is where the word pistol originated. Today, floriculture is practiced, and industries such as food, lace, shoes, cement, and glass are well developed. The cathedral with a 67m-high bell tower was built in the 13th century. Other buildings include the Basilica of Sant'Andrea, also in the Pisan Romanesque style. Population 87,275 (1991 estimate).
