André le Chapelain

A clergyman from the late 12th century to the early 13th century. His birth and death years and biography are unknown. He is said to have served as a chaplain to Marie, Countess of Champagne. He wrote Tractatus amoris, which was strongly influenced by Ovid, and was written in the form of a guide for a young friend. The first part begins with a general theory on the nature and origin of love, and includes discussions of love between men and women from all walks of life. The second part discusses the continuation, decline, and demise of love, and is famous for including the "Judgment on Love" by famous women such as Marie, and which was later featured in Stendhal's Treatise on Love.

12世紀後半～13世紀初期の聖職者。生没年，伝記不詳。シャンパーニュ伯夫人マリーの宮廷付司祭を務めたらしい。若い友人にあてた指南書という体裁で，オウィディウスの影響の強い《恋愛論Tractatus amoris》を著す。第1部は恋愛の本質･発生に関する一般論に始まり，各階層の男女による恋愛討議を収める。第2部は恋愛の持続･衰え･終焉を論ずるが，前記マリーらの名流婦人による，そして後にスタンダールの《恋愛論》に取り上げられる〈恋愛判決〉を含むことで有名。
