An Old World monkey of the Cercopithecidae family of primates (illustration) with a pig-like tail and a sturdy build. It is widely distributed in Southeast Asia and has a large geographical variation, but is classified into two subspecies: one that lives in Assam and Myanmar has a tuft of hair at the end of the tail and standing hair on the top of the head, and one that lives in the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Borneo, and neighboring islands and does not have the above characteristics. It is one of the largest species in the Macaque genus, and has a large, protruding snout, similar to that of a baboon. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
