Tatsukichi Irisawa

Medical scientist. Born on January 5, 1822, in Echigo Province (Niigata Prefecture) as the eldest son of Kyohei Irisawa (1831-1874), a doctor for the feudal domain. His uncle was Kensai Ikeda (1841-1918, Kyohei's younger brother). In 1889 (Meiji 22), he graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of the Imperial University of Tokyo. He became an assistant to the medical teacher Baelz. From 1890 to 1894, he studied in Germany, learning internal medicine and pathology at the University of Strasbourg and the University of Berlin. After returning to Japan, he became a physician for the Imperial Household Ministry, but resigned after three months and opened an internal medicine clinic in Nihonbashi, Tokyo. In 1895, he became an assistant professor at the Faculty of Medicine, and in 1901 (Meiji 34), he became a professor. In 1916 (Taisho 5), he returned to Japan from a business trip to Europe and the United States, and made great efforts in establishing X-ray diagnostics. In 1920, he became an official advisor to the Imperial Household Ministry, and in the following year, 1921, he became the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the Imperial University of Tokyo. After he resigned from his position as Dean in 1924, he became Chief Imperial Physician while still holding the position of Professor. In 1925, he became Professor Emeritus at the University of Tokyo. He made great contributions to the study of parasitology and beriberi. He passed away on November 8, 1938.

医学者。元治(げんじ)2年1月5日越後(えちご)国(新潟県)に藩医入沢恭平(きょうへい)(1831―1874)の長男として生まれた。叔父に池田謙斎(けんさい)(1841―1918、恭平の弟)がいる。1889年(明治22)帝国大学医科大学を卒業。内科教師ベルツの助手となる。1890年より1894年までドイツに留学、ストラスブール大学、ベルリン大学で内科学、病理学を学ぶ。帰国後、宮内省侍医となったが3か月で辞任し、東京、日本橋に内科診療所を開設した。1895年医科大学助教授、1901年(明治34)教授となる。1916年(大正5)欧米出張より帰国し、レントゲン診断学の確立に尽力した。1920年宮内省御用掛、翌1921年東京帝国大学医学部長となり、1924年医学部長辞任後、教授職のまま侍医頭となる。1925年東大名誉教授。寄生虫病学、脚気(かっけ)に関しての貢献は大きい。昭和13年11月8日没。
