Andreev, Leonid Nikolaevich
Born: August 21, 1871, Oryol
[Died] September 12, 1919. Neivala, Finland. Russian novelist. Born into a family of surveyors, he worked hard to graduate from the law faculty of Moscow University. He opened a practice as a lawyer, but it didn't work out, so he began to make a living as a writer, a profession he had been involved in since his student days. His Bergamot i Garas'ka (1898), which shows sympathy for the little people, caught the eye of Gorky, who recommended him to join the Znanie literary group. He published a rapid succession of works, including Molchanie (1901), Once Upon a Time (Zhili byli) (01), Stena (01), In the Fog (V tumane) (02), Mysl' (02), and Bezdna (02), becoming one of the leading novelists in Russia in the early 20th century. He fled to Finland due to his hostility towards the October Revolution of 1917, and died there. After the Thaw, his work was reevaluated. His main works include Zhizn' Vasiliya Fiveiskogo (03), Krasnyi smekh (04), the trilogy of plays K zvezdam (05), Zhizn' cheloveka (06), Savva (06), and his greatest work Rasskaz o semi poveshennykh (08).
