Leopold Jessner

German director. Born in Königsberg (now Kaliningrad, Russia). General director of the Berlin State Theater from 1919 to 1930. One of the disciples of the famous director Reinhardt. An expressionist, he rejected realistic stage sets and made frequent use of stepped stages with several levels. He was a pioneer of anti-illusion theater and is considered one of its most avant-garde activists. He tried to simplify the stage as much as possible to strongly highlight the message intended by the play. A highly intelligent republican, he was unable to settle in Germany under Hitler's rule and defected to Los Angeles, USA.

ドイツの演出家。ケーニヒスベルク（現、ロシア領カリーニングラード）に生まれる。1919年から1930年までベルリン州立劇場の総監督。名演出家ラインハルトの弟子の一人。表現主義者で、写実的な舞台装置を排して、数層からなる階段状の舞台を多用した。反イリュージョン演劇の先駆者で、そのもっとも前衛的な活動者の一人と評価されている。可能な限り舞台面を簡素化して、戯曲が意図する主張を強く浮かび上がらせようと努めた。高い知性をもつ共和主義者であった彼は、ヒトラー支配下のドイツに安住できずに亡命して、アメリカのロサンゼルスで没した。
