1886‐1980 German mathematician. Born in Godderau, a small village in Hesse, he studied at the University of Frankfurt and then at the University of Berlin, where he achieved success mainly in the field of complex function theory. His major work, Textbook of Function Theory, in two volumes (1930), has been a classic in the field since its publication and continues to contribute widely. In relation to this, he also wrote a book on ordinary differential equations from the perspective of function theory. After the war, he was rejected from academia due to his collaboration with the Nazis. Not much is known about the latter half of his life. He invented the classical theory of univalent functions in a circle based on the area theorem and attempted to quantify the distortion theorem.
