Ludwig Bieberbach

German mathematician. Born in Godderau, a small village in Hesse, he studied at the University of Frankfurt and then at the University of Berlin, where he achieved success mainly in the field of complex function theory. His major work, Textbook of Function Theory, in two volumes (1930), has been a classic in the field since its publication and continues to contribute widely. In relation to this, he also wrote a book on ordinary differential equations from the perspective of function theory. After the war, he was rejected from academia due to his collaboration with the Nazis. Not much is known about the latter half of his life. He invented the classical theory of univalent functions in a circle based on the area theorem and attempted to quantify the distortion theorem.

ドイツの数学者。ヘッセン州の小村ゴッデラウに生まれ，フランクフルト大学を経て，ベルリン大学において，主として複素関数論の分野で業績をあげた。主著《関数論教科書》全2巻(1930)は，刊行当時からこの分野の名著として，ひろく貢献し続けている。これと関連して，関数論の観点からみた常微分方程式についての著書もある。ナチスへの協力のかどで，戦後は学界から退けられた。後半生の消息はつまびらかでない。　円内単葉関数について，面積定理にもとづく古典的な理論を創始し，歪曲定理の定量化をはかった。
