Formerly Coptos. A town in Kinar Governorate, west bank of the Nile, central Egypt. It is said to have been founded during the Old Kingdom of Egypt. It was destroyed by the Romans in the 3rd century and later became a settlement for the Copts. In the Middle Ages it was an important stop on the caravan route. It produces grain and sugar cane. 旧名コプトス Coptos。エジプト中部，ナイル川西岸，キナー県の町。エジプト古王国時代に創設された町といわれる。3世紀にローマによって滅ぼされ，のちにコプト人の居住地となった。中世には隊商路の重要な拠点であった。穀物，サトウキビを産する。人口1万 5000 (1985推計) 。
