Formerly Coptos. A town in Kinar Governorate, west bank of the Nile, central Egypt. It is said to have been founded during the Old Kingdom of Egypt. It was destroyed by the Romans in the 3rd century and later became a settlement for the Copts. In the Middle Ages it was an important stop on the caravan route. It produces grain and sugar cane.
