The Kanshuji family

Japanese:
The Kanshuji family

A noble family that split off from the Northern branch of the Fujiwara clan. They are also called "Kanjujike." Emperor Daigo's maternal grandfather, Minister of the Interior Takafuji, and his son, Minister of the Right Sadakata, built Kanshuji Temple in Yamashina, Kyoto, as the clan's family temple, and the temple's name became the general name for the clan. During the Insei period, the family prospered rapidly after Tamefusa and Akitaka, father and son, served as trusted vassals of Emperor Shirakawa. For generations, they served as ministers of the Daijokan (Grand Council of State), while also serving retired emperors and regents, and were involved in practical matters within the court or within the household, and were known as a ministerial family or a famous family. Tamefusa's descendants were divided into various families such as Kanroji and Hamuro, but after the Minister of the Interior Tsuneaki of the Northern and Southern Courts period took the name Kanshuji, the family took that name, and was granted the title of count under the Meiji peerage system. During the Edo period, the 13 families, including the family, were collectively known as the Kanshuji family.
