A general term for insects belonging to the order Embioptera (Spinopoda). They are small, slender insects that at first glance resemble termites, hence the name. They have chewing mouthparts and no ocelli on their heads. Their antennae are thin and linear with 16-32 segments, their legs have three segments, and the first tarsal segment of their forelimbs is greatly swollen and has scattered spinning glands that secrete a silk-like substance that they use to build tubular nests on tree trunks and other surfaces to live in. For this reason, they are also called spinopoda. Males have two pairs of wings, while females are wingless. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
