An insect of the Orthoptera family, Gryllidae. Its body length is about 17 mm, and it is black-brown in color. It is found from Honshu to Kyushu, but not in cold regions. The hind wings fall off soon after emerging. It lives under stones or in holes at the roots of grassland, and lays eggs in the soil. It overwinters as eggs, and adults appear from late August. Males have a beautiful chirping sound, and have been loved since ancient times as representative chirping insects. They should be raised in a dark place with moderate humidity, and fed with vegetables and fruits with high moisture content, as well as pieces of dried fish.
