A former town in Inba County in northwestern Chiba Prefecture. It is located on the Shimousa Plateau on the southern bank of Lake Teganuma. It produces rice and vegetables. The southern part of the town area is now Chiba New Town, and urbanization is progressing and the population is increasing. The Hokuso Development Railway runs through the town. 千葉県北西部，印旛(いんば)郡の旧町。手賀沼南岸の下総(しもうさ)台地上にある。米，野菜を産する。町域の南部が千葉ニュータウンとなり，都市化が進展，人口も増加している。北総開発鉄道が通じる。2001年４月１日，市制し，白井市となる。35.41km2。４万7451人（1995）。
