…The original name was The Society for the Diffusion of Christian and General Knowledge among the Chinese. In 1887 (the 13th year of the Guangxu era), British Presbyterian missionary A. Williamson, in cooperation with R. Hart and Y. Allen, founded the Society in Shanghai under the name of the Society for the Diffusion of Christian and General Knowledge. In 1892, it was renamed the Guangxue Society. It enlightened the Chinese people by translating Western books into Chinese and publishing them. …
