Mizushima

Japanese: 水島 - みずしま

An area of Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture. The Mizushima Rinkai Railway runs from downtown Kurashiki. This is the core area of the southern industrial region, which was designated a new industrial city in 1963. Industrialization began in 1941 with the reclamation of land off the mouth of the Higashi Takahashi River, and land development and port development progressed from 1953 onwards. There are vast factory sites, abundant industrial water, and wharf facilities for mooring 100,000-ton ships, forming a heavy chemical industrial region centered on oil refining, petrochemicals, and steel.

岡山県倉敷市の一地区。倉敷市街から水島臨海鉄道が通じる。1963年新産業都市に指定された県南工業地域の核心地域。工業化は1941年東高梁(たかはし)川の河口沖埋立に始まり，1953年以降用地造成，港湾整備が進んだ。広大な工場用地，豊富な工業用水，10万トン級の係船岸壁施設があり，石油精製，石油化学，鉄鋼業を中心とする重化学工業地域を形成する。
