Cape Shiretoko

Japanese: 知床岬 - しれとこみさき

A cape at the tip of the Shiretoko Peninsula in eastern Hokkaido, which separates the Sea of Okhotsk from the Nemuro Strait. It is part of Shiretoko National Park and the Shiretoko World Heritage Site. Two coastal terraces, 20-40 meters above sea level and 75-100 meters above sea level, have developed nearby. There is a refuge port 1 kilometer southwest of the cape, and indigenous ruins from the Epi-Jomon to Okhotsk cultures have been discovered nearby. The coast, which has been eroded by the sea from volcanic breccia, has developed into a wide marine platform and is full of oddly shaped rocks and reefs. There are kelp watchtowers scattered below the sea cliffs, but no permanent residents.

Cape Shiretoko

北海道東部、オホーツク海と根室海峡とを分ける知床半島の先端の岬。知床国立公園域であり、世界自然遺産「知床」域。付近には標高20～40メートル、75～100メートルの2段の海岸段丘が発達する。岬の南西1キロメートルに避難港があり、その付近に続縄文からオホーツク文化に至る先住民遺跡が発見されている。火山角礫(かくれき)岩が海食を受けた海岸は、広い海食台が発達し、奇岩や暗礁が多い。海食崖(がい)下にはコンブ番屋が散在するが、定住者はいない。
