1887‐1954 Polish director. Son of a wealthy merchant, he dropped out of university to become a singer, and spent two years in Paris, where he was favored by Craig. He attempted suicide the year after returning to Japan (1910), but this turbulent start foreshadowed the life that would see him become "one of the greatest figures in the history of the theater world." He was exiled to Lvov (now part of Ukraine) for his left-wing activism (1932), sent to Auschwitz and released (1941), and became a false monk (1943-44). After joining the United Workers' Party after World War II, he became rector of the Warsaw Academy of Dramatic Arts, and was dismissed from his position as director of the Polish Theater (1950). Throughout his life, he demonstrated the qualities of a "Renaissance man" living in the 20th century. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
