The name means "Mother Venus" and was worshipped by the ancient Roman politician Julius Caesar as the patron deity of the Julius clan. Venus originally meant "charm" and was the goddess of vegetable gardens, but was later identified with the Greek Aphrodite. Caesar built a magnificent temple to her in 46 BC, and ceremonies were held enthusiastically during the imperial period.
