Tamayama [Village] - Tamayama

Japanese: 玉山[村] - たまやま

A village in Iwate County, central Iwate Prefecture. Population 14,245 (1995). Bordering Morioka City to the north. The central-eastern part is mountainous, part of the Kitakami Highlands, while the western part is gently rolling hills with only a small amount of lowland along the Kitakami River. In the past, it was known as a horse-breeding area, and was also a key transportation hub and post town. The Tohoku Main Line and National Route 4 run along the Kitakami River, and the Hanawa Line branches off at Kouma Station. The main industry is agriculture, and in addition to rice, hops, vegetables, and livestock are cultivated. There are scenic spots such as Lake Gandou, which is part of the Toyama Hayasaka Highlands Prefectural Natural Park, and Mount Himekami, known for its lily of the valley. Shibutani, at the western foot of Mount Himekami, is the birthplace of Ishikawa Takuboku, and is home to the Takuboku Memorial Museum.

岩手県中央部，岩手郡の村。人口1万4245(1995)。盛岡市の北に接する。中東部は北上高地に属する山地で，西部は南流する北上川沿いに低地がわずかにあるほかは丘陵がゆるやかに起伏する。古くは馬産地として知られ，また交通の要所で宿場町でもあった。北上川沿いに東北本線，国道4号線が走り，好摩（こうま）駅で花輪線を分岐する。主産業は農業で，米のほかホップ，野菜などの栽培，畜産が行われる。外山早坂高原県立自然公園に含まれる岩洞（がんどう）湖，スズランの名所として知られる姫神山などの景勝地があり，姫神山西麓の渋民は石川啄木の生地で，啄木記念館がある。
