Katsuragawa Hoken

Japanese: 桂川甫賢 - かつらがわほけん

1797-1845 ^* A doctor in the late Edo period.
Born in 1796. The eldest son of Katsuragawa Hochiku, the 5th head of the Katsuragawa family. The 6th head of the Katsuragawa family. He studied Dutch studies under Otsuki Gentaku and Tsuboi Shindo. In 1827, he succeeded his father as the shogunate's official physician. Later he was called Hogen. He tried to utilize the advantages of both Chinese and Dutch medicine. He was friends with Siebold and was a member of the Batavia Society of Arts and Sciences. He died on December 6, 1840, at the age of 48. His given name was Kuninyasu. His pen name was Seien. His pen names were Keisho and Suiran.

寛政9年生まれ。桂川家5代桂川甫筑の長男。桂川家6代。大槻玄沢(げんたく),坪井信道(しんどう)らに蘭学をまなぶ。文政10年父の跡をついで幕府の奥医師となる。のち法眼(ほうげん)。漢方と蘭方の両方の長所活用につとめた。シーボルトとまじわり,バタビア芸術科学協会会員。弘化(こうか)元年12月6日死去。48歳。名は国寧(くにやす)。字(あざな)は清遠。号は桂嶼,翠藍。
