Born in 1796. The eldest son of Katsuragawa Hochiku, the 5th head of the Katsuragawa family. The 6th head of the Katsuragawa family. He studied Dutch studies under Otsuki Gentaku and Tsuboi Shindo. In 1827, he succeeded his father as the shogunate's official physician. Later he was called Hogen. He tried to utilize the advantages of both Chinese and Dutch medicine. He was friends with Siebold and was a member of the Batavia Society of Arts and Sciences. He died on December 6, 1840, at the age of 48. His given name was Kuninyasu. His pen name was Seien.
