Silket processing - Silket (English spelling)

This is a process in which cotton thread or cotton fabric is subjected to tension and treated with a concentrated solution of caustic soda to smooth the surface and add a silky luster. The fabric becomes a little stiff, but it has a good texture and absorbs dyes better. This process is also called mercerized. Thread or cotton fabric that has been treated in this way is sometimes simply called mercerized.

綿糸、綿布などに張力をかけて、濃度のあるカ性ソーダ液で処理し、表面を滑らかにして絹のような（シルキーsilky）光沢を加える加工をいう。生地はやや硬くなるが、触感が与えられ、染料の吸着もよくなる。この加工をまたマーセライズmercerized加工ともいう。またこの加工を施した糸・綿布を、単にシルケットとよぶことがある。
