Kikuchi pattern

Japanese: 菊池像 - きくちぞう（英語表記）Kikuchi pattern

A type of electron diffraction pattern from a single crystal. Also known as a Kikuchi figure. There are Kikuchi lines, which are pairs of black and white lines, and Kikuchi bands, which are stripes of white or black between the Kikuchi lines. They were discovered by Masashi Kikuchi in 1928. Electron beams have a strong interaction with matter, and inelastically scattered electrons are Bragg reflected by the lattice plane of the crystal, resulting in constructive interference in one direction, causing a black line to appear on the photographic film, and parallel to this, the intensity in the direction behind the lattice plane is reduced, causing a white line to appear. 単結晶による電子回折像の1種。菊池図形ともいう。白黒1対の線が現れる菊池線と，菊池線の間が帯状に白または黒となる菊池帯 (菊池バンド) とがある。 1928年菊池正士によって発見された。電子線は物質との相互作用が強く，非弾性散乱をした電子がその結晶の格子面によってブラッグ反射された結果，ある方向では強め合うように干渉して写真フィルム上に黒い線が現れ，これに平行してその格子面の裏側の方向の強度が小さくなって白い線が現れる。 (→ブラッグの条件 )
