1912‐95 Canadian critic. Educated in Britain, he became involved in the anarchist movement. Returning to Japan in 1949, he made a great contribution to raising the standard of Canadian literary studies through the founding and editing of the quarterly magazine Canadian Literature (1959). He continues to be a prolific writer in a wide range of fields, including literary criticism, biographies, travelogues, and Canadian studies. He has written a large number of books, including Anarchism (1962), Canada and Canadians (1970), and his autobiography Letters to the Past (1982).
