Silliman, Benjamin
Born: August 8, 1779, North Stamford
[Died] November 24, 1864. New Haven, Connecticut. American geologist and chemist. He studied law at Yale University and remained at the university after graduating (1796). In 1802, he was asked to become a professor of chemistry and natural history, and studied under R. Hare at the Philadelphia Medical College. He became a professor at Yale in 1804, and served in that position until his retirement in 1853 as a professor emeritus. He was an outstanding educator and educator of science, and contributed to the development of the university by training many chemists, collecting mineralogy specimens widely, and founding the Sheffield School of Science. In 1818, he founded the "American Journal of Science and Art," known as "Silliman's Magazine" (later the "American Journal of Science"), which became one of the world's largest scientific journals. The mineral sillimanite was named after him.

[Died] January 14, 1885. New Haven, Connecticut. American chemist. Son of B. Silliman. After lecturing in medicinal chemistry and toxicology at the University of Louisville, he succeeded his father as a professor of chemistry at Yale University (1854). He is known for publishing a report on the usefulness of various components obtained by refining and distilling crude oil (1855), which paved the way for the subsequent petrochemical industry. He also contributed to the popularization of science by working on the editing of the "American Journal of Science."

アメリカの地質学者,化学者。エール大学で法律を学び,卒業 (1796) 後も大学に残る。 1802年,化学および博物学の教授就任を要請され,フィラデルフィア医学校の R.ヘアのもとで学び,04年エール大学教授に就任し,53年名誉教授となって引退するまでその職にあった。教育者,科学啓蒙家としてすぐれ,多くの化学者を養成するとともに,広く鉱物学標本を収集,またシェフィールド科学校を創設するなど,同大学の発展に貢献した。 1818年に『シリマン雑誌』として知られた"American Journal of Science and Art"(のちに"American Journal of Science")を創刊し,世界最大の科学雑誌の1つにした。なお鉱物のシリマナイト (ケイ線石) は彼の名にちなんで命名された。
