Born: August 8, 1779, North Stamford [Died] November 24, 1864. New Haven, Connecticut. American geologist and chemist. He studied law at Yale University and remained at the university after graduating (1796). In 1802, he was asked to become a professor of chemistry and natural history, and studied under R. Hare at the Philadelphia Medical College. He became a professor at Yale in 1804, and served in that position until his retirement in 1853 as a professor emeritus. He was an outstanding educator and educator of science, and contributed to the development of the university by training many chemists, collecting mineralogy specimens widely, and founding the Sheffield School of Science. In 1818, he founded the "American Journal of Science and Art," known as "Silliman's Magazine" (later the "American Journal of Science"), which became one of the world's largest scientific journals.
