Antonello da Messina

Around 1430-79
Italian painter. Except for a few domestic trips, he lived most of his life near his birthplace, Messina, Sicily. He studied under Colantonio in his hometown around 1450. After a stay in Naples, he met the Flemish painter P. Christus, probably in Milan in 1456, and is said to have learned Flemish oil painting techniques. Around 1470, he became acquainted with the works of Piero della Francesca in Rome. He stayed in Venice from 1475 to 1476. His style was influenced by Flemish painting and Piero della Francesca, and he himself had an influence on the Venetian school.

イタリアの画家。数回の国内旅行を除き，生涯の大部分を生地シチリア島のメッシナ近辺で暮らした。1450年ころ生地でコラントニオColantonioに師事。ナポリに滞在した後，56年にはおそらくミラノでフランドルの画家P.クリストゥスに会い，フランドルの油絵技法を習得したといわれる。70年前後にローマでピエロ･デラ･フランチェスカの作品を知る。75‐76年ベネチアに滞在。その様式にはフランドル絵画とピエロ･デラ･フランチェスカからの影響がみられ，彼自身はベネチア派に影響を及ぼした。
