A large-scale anti-Soviet peasant revolt that took place in the Tambov province in the central agricultural region of southwestern Russia from the summer of 1920 to the summer of 1921, was one of the peasant revolts in the latter half of the civil war. Aleksandr S. Antonov (1888-1922) had been a member of the Socialist Revolutionaries since 1906 and was the leader of the revolt. Tambov province, along with Ryazan province in the central agricultural region and Kazan and Penza provinces in the middle Volga region, had been an area of active peasant movements since before the October Revolution, and was also the site of severe grain requisitions (1918-21) throughout the civil war.
