A language belonging to the Eastern Aramaic language (Aramaic). It is the most important cultural language of all Aramaic languages. Originally centered in Edessa, the center of early Eastern Christianity, it later spread to Syria and northern Mesopotamia as a literary and academic language. With the schism of the Syrian Church (Eastern Orthodox Church) in the 5th century, it split into two dialects: the Western Jacobite (centered in Edessa) and the Eastern Nestorian (centered in Nisibis). As a spoken language, it was replaced by Arabic around the 8th century and almost died out, but it was used as a literary and religious language until around the 14th century. Caucasian Assyrian is a modern spoken form of Syriac that remains to this day.

東方アラム語（アラム語）に属する言語。全アラム語中最も重要な文化語。元来は初期東方キリスト教の中心地エデッサを中心とするものだが，後にはシリア，北メソポタミアに文学語・学問語として広まった。５世紀シリア教会（東方正教会）分裂とともに西方のヤコブ派（エデッサ中心）と東方のネストリウス派（ニシビス中心）の２方言に分かれた。口語としては８世紀ころアラビア語にとって代わられ，ほとんど死滅したが，文学・宗教語としては14世紀ころまで用いられた。カフカスのアッシリア語はわずかに残ったシリア語現代口語である。
