...From the middle of the Edo period, tools were developed, home industries arose, geta makers appeared, geta became popular, and geta came to be worn mainly for walking. Geta were called ashida in ancient times, and the Wamyōshō tells us that they were named after the part of the foot that they were made from. Also, the Nara period Toji Shakyōdōkai (760) lists both kigutsu (wooden clogs) and bokkuri (wooden sandals), but the excavated items include both wooden shoes carved into the shape of a shoe and the so-called geta of today, which shows that they were called bokkuri. ...
