Omiya Imperial Palace

Japanese: 大宮御所 - おおみやごしょ
Omiya Imperial Palace

Refers to the residence of the Grand Empress Dowager or Empress Dowager. (1) The Kyoto Omiya Palace is connected to the Kyoto Sento Palace by a corridor to the northwest. It was built by the Edo Shogunate during the Kan'ei era (1624-1644) for Emperor Gomizunoo's Empress Consort Minamoto Kazuko (Tofukumon'in, daughter of Shogun Tokugawa Hidetada), and served as the residence of the Empress Dowager for many generations. During this time, it burned down several times, and was rebuilt in 1867 (Keio 3) after being destroyed during the Ansei era. (2) Refers to the Empress Dowager's residence located within the Aoyama Imperial Palace in Tokyo. Since 1874 (Meiji 7), successive empress dowagers have lived here, including Empress Eisho (Emperor Komei's consort Kujo Asako), Empress Shoken (Emperor Meiji's wife Ichijo Haruko), and Empress Teimei (Emperor Taisho's wife Kujo Sadako). The residence of Empress Teimei, which was completed in 1929 (Showa 4), was burned down in an air raid in May 1945 during the Pacific War.
