Panorpa japonica (tail worm)

An insect of the Mecoptera order, Mecoptera family. Its abdomen is cylindrical with a tapered posterior segment, but the male's genital segments are large, with a pair of hooked projections at the end in a pincer shape, and it always keeps the end of its abdomen raised. This posture is the origin of the name "scorpion fly," and when attacking, it extends its round genital segments with pincers forward over its head, reminiscent of a scorpion, hence the English name scorpion fly. It is usually black, with a body length of about 20 mm, a long, thin head that extends downward with a small jaw at the tip, and four identical wings that are 13 to 20 mm long.

シリアゲムシ目シリアゲムシ科の昆虫。腹は円筒状で後方の節は細くなっているが，雄の生殖節は大きく，その末端に1対のかぎ状突起がはさみ状についており，いつも腹端部を上へあげている。この姿勢がシリアゲムシと名付けられた由来であり，攻撃のとき，はさみのついたまるい生殖節を頭越しに前に出すようすはサソリを連想させるので英名ではscorpion flyと呼ばれる。ふつう黒色，体長20mmくらいで，頭は細長く下にのびて，その先端に小さなあごがつき，翅は4枚とも同形で13～20mmと長い。
