They are small, with body lengths of 0.2mm to 2cm, and most are 0.5 to 1mm. Incidentally, in 17th-century France, the ciron mite that infests cheese was considered to be the smallest known mite, as used by La Fontaine and Pascal. Lice and fleas are insects, but mites are a completely different animal from insects, with the head, thorax, and abdomen fused together, no antennae, compound eyes, or wings, and four pairs of walking legs.
