The Greek word for "city of the dead" originally meant a cemetery near an ancient city, but it is sometimes used to refer specifically to the cemetery on the outskirts of Alexandria. In ancient Egypt, they were located on the opposite side of the Nile from the city, but in ancient Greece and Rome, they were located along the road from the outskirts of the city.
