English Stage Company

A British theatre company. Founded in 1955 by director George Devine with the main objective of introducing new plays from Japan and abroad, especially those that were difficult to stage at commercial theatres, the company began performing the following year at the Royal Court Theatre in the Chelsea district of London. One of the productions that year, Look Back in Anger by unknown newcomer John Osborne, sparked a movement for innovation in British theatre. New works by A. Wesker, J. Arden, N. F. Simpson, E. Bond and others were subsequently introduced to the London theatre scene from the company.

イギリスの演劇団体。1955年，演出家ジョージ･ディバインが中心となって，内外の新しい劇，とりわけ商業劇場で上演されにくい作品を紹介することをおもな目的として結成され，ロンドンのチェルシー地区にあるローヤル･コート劇場を本拠として翌年公演活動を始めた。この年の演目の一つであった無名の新人ジョン･オズボーンの《怒りをこめてふり返れ》は，イギリス演劇革新運動のきっかけとなった。続いてA.ウェスカー，J.アーデン，N.F.シンプソン，E.ボンドなどの新作もここからロンドンの劇壇に紹介された。
