…As telephones became more widespread and more common, there were demands for accurate and rapid connections, service at all times of the day and night, and confidentiality of communications, and the intervention of operators became a problem. In response to these demands, in 1889, a mechanical automatic telephone exchange was invented by A.B. Strawger (1847-1905), who was said to have been a funeral director at the time.
