Shiranui Noriemon - Shiranui Noriemon
1801-1854 A sumo wrestler from the late Edo period.
Born in October 1812. Became a disciple of Minato Yuraemon in Osaka and rose to the rank of Ozeki. Later, he went to Edo and became a disciple of Ikazuchi Gondayu, and was employed by Lord Hosokawa of Higo, taking the name Shiranui. In 1831, he became the 8th Yokozuna. After retiring, he trained disciples in Osaka. He passed away on July 27, leap year 1854. He was from Higo (Kumamoto Prefecture). His surname was Chikahisa, and his given name was Shinji.

享和元年10月生まれ。大坂の湊由良右衛門の弟子となり,大関まで昇進。のち江戸にでて雷(いかずち)権太夫に入門,肥後細川侯のお抱えとなり,不知火と名のる。天保(てんぽう)11年8代横綱。引退後は大坂で弟子をそだてた。嘉永(かえい)7年閏(うるう)7月27日死去。54歳。肥後(熊本県)出身。姓は近久。名は信次。
