Yusetsu Kaihoku

Japanese:
Yusetsu Kaihoku
Year of death: September 3, 1677 (September 29, 1677)
Year of birth: 1598
A painter from the early Edo period. He is said to be the son of Kaihō Tomomatsu, but may have been adopted. His given name was Michiki and he also went by the names Tomomatsu and Tomomatsu. After his father's death, he made a living as Otani Tadazaemon, an artist (a town painter who not only painted specially ordered paintings but also produced mass-produced pre-paintings and other more craft-related work), but thanks to the recommendation of Kasuga no Tsubone, who Tomomatsu had looked after for a time, he was bestowed an Edo mansion by Tokugawa Iemitsu and was given orders to work there. It is believed that he began to use the Kaihō family name around that time. After that, he participated in the production of screen paintings for the Imperial Palace during the Meireki, Kanbun, and Enpo periods, and also served the court of Emperor Gomizunoo and others, and was awarded the title of Hokkō. His style is light and gentle, and many of his works are intricately ingenious. He is more strongly influenced by Yamato-e and the Edo Kano style than Tomomatsu. His representative works include the "Cloud Dragon" sliding door painting at Rinsho-in Temple in Myoshinji (Kasuga no Tsubone's family temple), the "Gion Festival Screen" (owned by the Yawatayama Preservation Association in Kyoto), and the "Itsukushima Screen" (private collection). <References> "Tokiyoshi-kyoki" and "About the Painter" by Yamane Yuzo (Art History, No. 48)
