The Andokides Painter - The Andokides Painter
Greek potter. Dates of birth and death unknown. Named after the potter Andokidēs, he painted the pottery. Active in Athens in the second half of the 6th century BCE. A pupil of the black-figure master Exekias, he is considered the founder of red-figure pottery painting, and marked a new era in Greek pottery painting by combining black-figure and red-figure styles on the front and back of the same piece of pottery. His expression is delicate, but he has not yet fully overcome the rigidity of black-figure style. [Masaki Maeda]
