Greek potter. Dates of birth and death unknown. Named after the potter Andokidēs, he painted the pottery. Active in Athens in the second half of the 6th century BCE. A pupil of the black-figure master Exekias, he is considered the founder of red-figure pottery painting, and marked a new era in Greek pottery painting by combining black-figure and red-figure styles on the front and back of the same piece of pottery. His expression is delicate, but he has not yet fully overcome the rigidity of black-figure style. [Masaki Maeda] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
