Masatsugu Ando

Born: September 13, 1878 in Saitama
[Died] November 8, 1952. Tokyo Japanese language scholar and linguist. Graduated from Jingu Kogakkan in 1898. Completed elective course in linguistics at Tokyo Imperial University in 1904, and became a professor at Jingu Kogakkan in the same year. After studying in America, England, Germany, and France, he became a professor at Taipei Imperial University in 1928, and its president in 1941. He became a professor at Toyo University in 1946. He is known for his research into the word structure of ancient Japanese. He was deeply involved in issues of the Japanese language and Japanese characters, having served as chairman of the National Language Council. With a broad perspective, he also discussed the relationship between the history of Japanese language and cultural history. His major works include "Studies on Ancient Japanese Language" (1914), "Outline of Linguistics" (1927), "General Thoughts on Japanese Language" (1931), and "Classics and Ancient Language" (1939). These works were the focus of the "Collected Works of Ando Masatsugu" (7 volumes, 1974-75).

国語学者，言語学者。 1898年神宮皇學館卒業。 1904年東京帝国大学言語学科選科修了。同年神宮皇學館教授。アメリカ，イギリス，ドイツ，フランスに留学後，1928年台北帝国大学教授。 1941年同大学総長。 1946年東洋大学教授。古代国語の語構成の研究を進めたことで知られる。国語審議会会長を務めるなど，国語国字問題にも関係するところが深かった。広い視野をもち，国語史と文化史との関連についても論究した。主著に『古代国語の研究』 (1914) ，『言語学概論』 (1927) ，『国語学通考』 (1931) ，『古典と古語』 (1939) などがあり，これらを中心にした『安藤正次著作集』 (7巻，1974～75) が出ている。
