A group of proteins secreted by lymphocytes in response to stimuli such as antigens. They are thought to mainly control the state of the immune system. They generally act on target cells and exhibit a variety of physiological activities, but few of them have been identified. Those that have been identified are named interleukins, and a representative T cell growth factor is named interleukin 2. Interferon is also a type of lymphokine.
